Grant
Opportunities

Greater Pike Community Foundation was created to enable generous individuals, families, and local businesses to maximize their charitable support through organized, targeted community philanthropy. The Foundation provides a permanent and personal way to give back to the region we love and have worked so hard to nurture and maintain.

The Foundation awards grants in keeping with this mission.

Greater Pike’s first fund was the Barbara J. Buchanan Fund, established in 2014, and it has subsequently provided financial support to dozens of local organizations.

Barbara J. Buchanan was one of the great civic leaders of our era. Her philanthropy in Milford and Pike County was exceptional, providing support for a wide range of organizations in human services, the arts, historic preservation, and civic improvement.

Barbara’s generosity was legendary, but it wasn’t the only way she provided support. Always with a twinkle in her eye and a smile on her face, her charm brought people together and inspired them to work cooperatively to accomplish important goals.

She joined the Greater Pike Community Foundation’ board of directors in our infancy, helping to guide us through those critical early years, when we were establishing our credibility and educating the community as to the important role a community foundation could play. Barbara graciously agreed to be the honoree at our first annual awards dinner, which established a precedent for Greater Pike to honor philanthropic leaders each year.

Richard “Dick” Snyder was among Pike County’s greatest supporters. His community leadership, vision, and contributions were exceptional. Active in a number of conservation, cultural, historic preservation, and civic organizations, Dick was a founding board member of Greater Pike Community Foundation and the endowment he left is a lasting legacy for the community and causes he loved.

Dick was a self-made successful businessman and entrepreneur. Born in Carlisle, PA and raised on a dairy farm, he attended a one-room schoolhouse before graduating from Big Spring High School in 1957. He received his Bachelor of Science degree, magna cum laude, from Penn State University in 1961. A certified public accountant, he served in various executive management positions until 1991 when he retired from Philip Morris International, where he was executive vice president, Europe-Middle East-Africa. After his retirement, he maintained his New York City apartment but lived primarily in Milford, PA, at his Foster Hill farm.

Perhaps one of Dick’s most significant community endeavors began in 1997 when he founded and chaired the Milford Enhancement Committee (MEC), whose goal is to make Milford a better place to live, visit, and do business. Since its inception, the MEC has raised and invested more than $9 million to improve Milford’s streetscapes and public spaces to make them safer, more attractive and more pedestrian friendly.
