Area Food Pantries Get Help from Greater Pike Covid Relief Fund

Providing food for those in need has become an arduous and frustrating task—and today, often an impossible one. The Covid-19 pandemic has placed an unforeseen hardship on food pantries all over the country. That is why Greater Pike Community Foundation is pleased to be granting four of Pike County’s food pantries $2,000 each to help them help those suffering from the effect of the crisis.
Grants from the Greater Pike Covid Relief Fund (GPCRF) were awarded to the Ecumenical Food Pantry in Milford, the Good Cheer Food Pantry at St. Luke’s in Greeley, the Holy Trinity Food Pantry in Dingmans Ferry and the St. Ann’s Bridgepoint Food Pantry in Shohola.
“There is a growing and urgent need in our area to alleviate hunger,” said Greater Pike’s Executive Director Jenni Hamill. “The Greater Pike Covid Relief Fund was established to support organizations like our local food pantries where supplies are diminishing daily.”
That need is evident at the Ecumenical Food Pantry, where Director Nancy Potter says the demand has nearly doubled. “We used to serve forty families. Now it’s up to seventy. Twenty new people signed up in the last two weeks alone.”
Barbara Hupfer at Holy Trinity Food Pantry said she is seeing one new family every day, “We used to see two to three families a month,” she explained. She said that with supplies low, getting supplies is an issue on top of rising prices. “The grant will definitely help us out,” she added.
“With the support of generous donors,” said Hamill, “we are helping the food pantries to provide an absolutely essential service to our community.”
