Local Food Pantries Awarded Grants
February 4, 2019
Four local food pantries spanning Pike County received $1,000 each from Greater Pike Community Foundation in recognition of their efforts to fight hunger and provide support for those in need. Grants were awarded to the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Pike County in Milford, the Good Cheer Food Pantry at Saint Luke’s in Greeley, the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church Food Pantry in Dingmans Ferry, and the Saint Ann’s Food Pantry in Shohola.
“This is a very slow time of the year for donations and we appreciate everything that comes in. Currently, we are trying to upgrade the nutritional content of our offerings. We have used the funds awarded by Greater Pike to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables which are particularly lacking this time of the year,” said Jim Snodgrass, Treasurer of the Ecumenical Food Pantry of Pike County.
Carol Laput of St. Ann’s echoed the need for support this time of the year, “There has been a marked increase in families requesting assistance – so much so that we are having difficulty keeping up with the demand. Our cupboards are bare, and this will help us so much!”
Holy Trinity and Good Cheer Food Pantries also put the grants to immediate use, ameliorating Holy Trinity’s frozen food stock and Good Cheer’s holiday baskets.
“Our local food pantries need community support year round. We hope that these gifts not only provide groceries to those in need but also inspire others to donate, volunteer, or otherwise get involved in the fight against hunger,” said Jim Pedranti, Chairperson of Greater Pike Community Foundation.
